A timing belt is never just a timing belt
On an interference engine, a snapped timing belt bends valves and the repair stops being a repair and starts being an engine. That is why the job is done as a kit — belt, tensioner, idlers, seals and, on most engines, the water pump, because the pump is driven by the same belt and it is already out.
Doing the belt and leaving a 130,000-mile water pump behind it is how a car comes back six months later with coolant everywhere and the same eight hours of labour to pay for twice. We quote the whole job the first time.
When we tell you not to fix it
Sometimes the honest answer is that the repair costs more than the car is worth, and the right move is to put the money toward the next one. We will say so. We have said so to people who came in expecting a fight about it.

How do I know if my timing belt is due?
Check the interval in your owner's manual — most are between 60,000 and 105,000 miles, or a number of years, whichever comes first. Give us the year, make, model and mileage and we will look it up for you.
Do you rebuild transmissions in-house?
We diagnose, service and replace transmissions, and we work with rebuilders we've used for years for the units that need it. We'll tell you which route we recommend and why, with the price for each.
My car is leaking oil. Is that urgent?
It depends on where and how fast. A weeping valve cover gasket is a this-year job. Oil dripping onto an exhaust manifold is a fire risk, and losing oil faster than you top it up is an engine on a timer. We trace leaks with dye rather than guessing at the highest gasket.
Is it worth fixing an old car?
Sometimes. Bring it in and we will give you the number, the honest condition of the rest of the vehicle, and our opinion. Then it is your call with real information in front of you.
