Auto Air Conditioning Repair

Auto A/C Repair in Sandston, VA

Air conditioning is a sealed system. If it's low on refrigerant, the refrigerant went somewhere — and putting more in without finding out where is pouring money into the atmosphere.

We pull a vacuum, hold it, and watch. We use dye and an electronic sniffer to find the leak. Then we tell you what it costs to fix properly, and what it costs to just get you through August, and you pick.

A/C & Heating at Lloyd's Tire & Auto in Sandston, VA

What you get

Every a/c & heating job includes

  • System performance test — vent temperature, pressures both sides
  • Vacuum and hold test for leaks
  • UV dye and electronic leak detection
  • Compressor, clutch, condenser and evaporator inspection
  • Cabin air filter checked (the reason half of all "weak A/C" complaints exist)
  • Evacuate and recharge to factory weight, not by guess
  • Heater core, blend door and blower motor diagnosis

Free with every service

The 16-point vehicle check, with photos of anything worth showing you. It is a health report, not a sales pitch — and it does not apply to state inspections, which are a separate state-regulated procedure.

Air conditioning fades before it dies

Almost nobody's A/C quits all at once. It gets a little less cold each summer, and one week in early August it stops being able to keep up with a Virginia afternoon and you notice.

The three cheap checks worth doing in May are the cabin air filter, the condenser fins at the front of the car, and the vent temperature at idle versus at 2,000 rpm. The expensive part everybody guesses at is the compressor — and it's the one part that most often gets replaced when the real fault was a $40 pressure switch or an electrical fault in the clutch circuit.

Heat and defrost matter more than you think

A defroster that can't clear the windshield is a safety item, and a windshield you can't see through is an inspection failure. If your heat has gone lukewarm, it is usually a thermostat stuck open, a low coolant level, a plugged heater core, or a blend door actuator — and the difference between the cheapest and dearest of those is significant, which is why we diagnose it rather than start replacing.

The staff are professional and explains everything very clearly. They are honest and transparent with no attempts to upsell unnecessary services. I highly recommend this shop for reliable work.

A/C & Heating

A/C & Heating — questions we get asked

Can you just recharge my A/C?

We can, and sometimes that is the right call on an older car with a slow leak. But we will tell you where it is leaking first, because refrigerant does not get used up — if it's low, it is escaping.

How much does A/C repair cost?

The shop confirms the diagnostic charge before testing. From there the repair can range from a pressure switch or recharge to a compressor or condenser, and we quote it after we know which one you have — with photos.

Do you work on the newer R-1234yf systems?

Call us with your year and model. Newer vehicles use R-1234yf rather than R-134a and the two require separate equipment — we will tell you straight whether yours is one we can service in-house.

My A/C is cold at speed but warm at idle. What is that?

Classic airflow-across-the-condenser problem — usually a cooling fan not coming on, or a condenser packed with road debris. It is one of the cheaper A/C faults, which is a nice thing to be able to say.
