The free code reader at the parts store gives you a number. It does not give you an answer. P0171 means the engine is running lean — it does not mean you need an oxygen sensor, and the number of perfectly good oxygen sensors sold on the strength of that code every year would fill this building.

Steady light or flashing light
A steady check engine light means the computer has logged a fault and wants it looked at — this week is fine, this month is pushing it.
A flashing check engine light means an active misfire dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. That destroys a catalytic converter in a matter of miles, and a converter is one of the most expensive parts on a modern car. If it's flashing, pull over and call us.
The gas cap thing is real
A loose or cracked fuel cap genuinely does set an EVAP code and turn the light on. Tighten it until it clicks, drive a few days, and see if the light clears itself.
If it comes back, the leak is somewhere else in the system, and finding it takes a smoke machine rather than a guess. We'd rather you try the free thing first.
Why the light matters for your inspection
Virginia's safety inspection is a safety inspection — a check engine light by itself is not an automatic failure of the state safety inspection. But it is a warning that something in the engine or emissions system has failed, and in the Northern Virginia emissions program it is an automatic failure of that separate test.

Why do you charge for diagnostics when the parts store does it free?
Because they are not the same service. A parts store reads a code off the computer in ninety seconds. We test the circuit, the component and the system that set the code so you replace the broken part instead of the suspected one. We credit the fee toward the repair.
How long does a diagnosis take?
Most take an hour or two. Intermittent faults — the ones that only happen on a cold morning or after forty minutes on the highway — sometimes take longer, and we will tell you before we start if we think yours is one of those.
My check engine light went off by itself. Am I fine?
The fault code is still stored even though the lamp went out. It went off because the condition passed its self-test for enough drive cycles. It will very likely come back. Bring it in and we can read the stored history.
Can a check engine light fail my Virginia state inspection?
Not on its own for the statewide safety inspection. It is a separate matter from the emissions testing required in some Northern Virginia localities — and it still means something is broken.
