You get a rejection sticker, valid for 15 calendar days beyond the day of inspection. In that window you can't be cited for the equipment defect that caused the failure. You may have the repair done anywhere — if you bring it back to us inside 15 days, we only re-inspect the item that failed.

Often, yes. A puncture in the tread area, under about a quarter inch, that hasn't been driven on flat, can be repaired properly from the inside. Sidewall damage cannot be repaired safely by anyone, at any price.

Every oil change is a good rhythm — roughly every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. It costs nothing with most services here and it is the single cheapest way to get the full life out of a set.

Not always. On a front-wheel-drive car, two is often fine — and the new pair goes on the rear, not the front, regardless of which end drives. On all-wheel drive, most manufacturers require all four within a small tread difference, and we will show you why in the owner’s manual rather than just telling you.

The car pulls to one side on a flat road, the steering wheel is crooked when you’re going straight, the steering feels loose, or one edge of a tire is wearing faster than the rest. Any of those is worth a measurement.

Once a year is a sensible rhythm around here, and always when you put on new tires or after you hit something hard enough to make you wince.

Usually, yes. The rear wheels set the thrust angle the front wheels have to be aligned to. Aligning only the front on a car with an out-of-spec rear is guesswork.

Please don’t. Grinding means the friction material is gone and you are braking on metal, which lengthens your stopping distance and is destroying the rotor with every stop. Call us — we will get you in.

We test it first. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, and water boils under hard braking, which is how you get a pedal that goes to the floor coming down a grade. If the moisture content is high we will show you the reading.

Because they are not the same service. A parts store reads a code off the computer in ninety seconds. We test the circuit, the component and the system that set the code so you replace the broken part instead of the suspected one. We credit the fee toward the repair.

Most take an hour or two. Intermittent faults — the ones that only happen on a cold morning or after forty minutes on the highway — sometimes take longer, and we will tell you before we start if we think yours is one of those.

The fault code is still stored even though the lamp went out. It went off because the condition passed its self-test for enough drive cycles. It will very likely come back. Bring it in and we can read the stored history.

Not on its own for the statewide safety inspection. It is a separate matter from the emissions testing required in some Northern Virginia localities — and it still means something is broken.

We can, and sometimes that is the right call on an older car with a slow leak. But we will tell you where it is leaking first, because refrigerant does not get used up — if it's low, it is escaping.

Classic airflow-across-the-condenser problem — usually a cooling fan not coming on, or a condenser packed with road debris. It is one of the cheaper A/C faults, which is a nice thing to be able to say.

It depends on where and how fast. A weeping valve cover gasket is a this-year job. Oil dripping onto an exhaust manifold is a fire risk, and losing oil faster than you top it up is an engine on a timer. We trace leaks with dye rather than guessing at the highest gasket.

Yes. The exhaust system is part of the safety inspection, and a system with holes, excessive noise or leaks ahead of the passenger compartment is a rejection.

Usually. That's the point of having a welder. If the rest of the system is sound, we fix the section that failed.

Three to five years in this climate. Heat is the limiting factor here, not cold. Once it is past three, get it load-tested at every oil change.

A rapid machine-gun clicking is usually a battery too weak to turn the engine. A single loud clunk with lights that stay bright is more often the starter. Either way it is a five-minute test rather than a guess.

Yes — that is a parasitic draw test. We measure what is still drinking current after the car has gone to sleep and then isolate it circuit by circuit. It takes a bit of patience and it beats buying batteries forever.

The car floats or wallows over dips, dives hard under braking, or keeps bouncing after a bump. Visible fluid on the strut body is a definite. So is uneven cupped wear on the tires.

Worn ball joints, tie rod ends and other steering components absolutely can, because they are safety items. That is one of the reasons we check them on every inspection rather than only when someone complains.

Almost always. Replacing a control arm, tie rod, strut or ball joint moves the geometry. Skipping the alignment afterwards is how a good repair turns into a new set of tires.

No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a manufacturer cannot require you to use a dealer for routine maintenance to keep your warranty valid. Use the right specification parts and fluids and keep the receipts — which is exactly what we do.
